Soup to Nuts: Vol. 8

We have already arrived at the final week of the regular season.  It's not cool how fast it has flown by, but can't complain too much because it's March - a glorious month.  Hopefully this doesn't fly by that quickly. And there is still a lot to be decided in the Big East in this final week.  Enjoy.

Now to the Power Rankings...

Soup to Nuts: Vol. 7

The Big East power rankings took a week off last week for no good reason at all, but they are back.  Enjoy

Soup to Nuts: Vol. 6

Power Rankings

We are more than halfway through the conference schedule and it looks pretty clear which teams are good, which teams are decent and which teams are awful. If James Southerland is reinstated for the Orange today I believe it is a two horse race between Cuse and Louisville to win the league. If his appeal is rejected I’d be surprised if the Ville didn’t take it. Pittsburgh, Marquette and Georgetown will remain in contention, but will fall short. However, any five of these teams could run the Big East Tournament. And the only conceivable game I can see either DePaul or South Florida winning is when they play each other in early March.

Now to the rankings…

Soup to Nuts: Vol. 5

The Big East weekly power rankings are in

The top and bottom has stayed the same, while Villanova and St. John's have been making some noise.  There are some big games on the docket this weekend as the top four teams play eachother (Syracuse at Pittsburgh and Marquette at Louisville).  Enjoy.

Soup to Nuts: Vol. 4

The triumphant return of the Big East Power Rankings

I really do not have a good excuse for taking multiple weeks off from publishing Soup to Nuts.  And for that I apologize.  But I promise from here on out, every Friday, you the people will get the updated power rankings for the best conference in the land -- for this last year anyway.

And we're off...

Soup to Nuts: Vol. 3

Weekly Big East Power Rankings

Beyond the Jimmy V Classic that took place on Tuesday night and Marquette’s victory over in-state rival Wisconsin on Saturday, it was a fairly quiet week for Big East teams.  Unfortunately, as these student-athletes enter ‘finals week’, most coaches like to employ the ‘cupcake’ strategy or to not play at all to give the students enough free time to take care of business so they can do what’s important down the road, play basketball of course.  Given that, the slate is fairly weak over the next seven days besides for Louisville vs Memphis and Notre Dame vs Purdue.  However, we are only three weeks from the second half of the season, conference play.  Now to the rankings…

Soup to Nuts: Vol. 2

By:  Shane McCarthy

Last week the Big East handled the SEC with ease in the SEC/Big East Challenge, finishing 9-3 over the three day span.  Some of the wins were impressive (Notre Dame over Kentucky), while others were ugly (no doubt I'm looking at you Georgetown and your 37 points scored but still found a way to beat Tennessee).  This week is headlined by the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday night, involving Georgetown and UConn.

This week's Power Rankings are below, with a notable shake-up near the top.  Syracuse remains at the top, but Cincinnati slides into the #2 spot (pushing Louisville down to #3) with a quality win over Alabama on Saturday afternoon.  The Bearcats may not be the second best team in the conference come the end of the season, but 7-0 is 7-0, so they deserve it as of now.

Soup to Nuts: Vol.1

By:  Shane McCarthy

The most current and official Big East Men’s Basketball POWER RANKINGS

But first, a brief explanation about the title: ‘Soup to Nuts’.

Per Wikipedia - “Soup to nuts” is an American English idiom conveying the meaning of “from beginning to end”.  It is derived from the description of a full course dinner, in which courses progress from soup to a dessert of nuts.  But most of all I just really enjoy the phrase and didn’t want to slap the bland old title of ‘power rankings’ on my, well, power rankings.  And it just so happens to kind of make logical sense, considering I am ranking the teams from 1 (the beginning) to 15 (the end).

But enough of that.  We are about four weeks into the season and I have seen enough from each team to issue the inaugural installment of Soup to Nuts.  Feel free to leave a comment, shoot me an email or hit me up on twitter (@shane_t_mac) if you so please.
